How to Read Nutrition Labels Like a Pro

March 20, 2026

Why Nutrition Labels Matter

Nutrition labels are your first line of defense against misleading marketing claims. A product that says 'natural' or 'healthy' on the front might tell a very different story on the back. Learning to read these labels is one of the most powerful skills for better health.

The Ingredient List

Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight. The first ingredient makes up the largest portion of the product. If sugar (or its many aliases) appears in the first three ingredients, that product is primarily sugar. Watch for hidden sugar names: high-fructose corn syrup, dextrose, maltose, sucrose, and dozens more.

The Nutrition Facts Panel

  • Serving size — manufacturers sometimes use unrealistically small servings to make numbers look better
  • Calories — total energy per serving
  • Total Fat, Saturated Fat, Trans Fat — trans fat should always be 0g
  • Sodium — aim for less than 2,300mg per day total
  • Total Carbohydrates, Fiber, Sugars — higher fiber is better, lower added sugars is better
  • Protein — essential for satiety and muscle maintenance
